Enlisting in Greensburg, Pennsylvania on August 23rd, 1864, Daniel Shupe mustered in a few days later into Company K, 211th Pennsylvania Infantry. Organized at Pittsburgh, Daniel and the 211th Pennsylvania were sent to the front, and assumed defensive positions in the trenches at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia in September 1864. Apart of the 9th Corps, in late March 1865, the 211th Pennsylvania helped repulse the Confederate assault on Fort Stedman, losing one man killed and 10 wounded. However, Daniel and the 211th Pennsylvania were about to be heavily engaged during the breakthrough of the Confederate lines at Petersburg on April 2nd, 1865. With the 205th and 207th Pennsylvania, the 211th Pennsylvania made an assault on Fort Mahone, capturing it that day. The Confederates made multiple attempts to recapture the fort, but the 211th Pennsylvania was able to repulse each one. It wasn’t without a cost though, as the regiment suffered a total of 135 casualties. One of these casualties was Daniel Shupe, who was killed in action during the fighting around Fort Mahone on April 2nd, 1865.
